Secrets of the winning teams in sports and business: How to promote team spirit in your team
Cologne, June 8th, 2018 -
National coach Joachim Löw and company executives face the same challenge: they have to form people with different talents into a winning team. It is crucial that everyone has a common goal in mind and that everyone is committed to achieving it. Pure factual arguments do not trigger the necessary motivation and enthusiasm. Emotions are much more effective: “Nothing motivates as much as pride in your own performance. It is just as important to trust that mistakes in the team will be corrected and forgiven - by the colleagues as well as by the managers, ”explains Iris Dohmen, who as a specialist at TÜV Rheinland advises companies and organizations from various industries on operational psychology issues.
Emotions shape successful teams
Acknowledging the success of every single employee is a first step on the way to becoming a successful team. In addition to positive feelings, fears must also be addressed and coping strategies must be found together. Open and trusting communication is a prerequisite for this - between managers and employees as well as among colleagues. Because certain questions can only be clarified in team meetings. Finding and implementing solutions together strengthens the group's sense of belonging. Joint ventures that create positive memories connect even more strongly. A strong feeling of togetherness keeps the team together when things are not going so well and helps them to win a game even if they are behind.
Different skills expand the options for action
No soccer team is only successful with strikers. Only the right mix of different skills in the respective game positions makes the team able to act in every situation. It is the same in the company: teams benefit from different professional qualifications. The social skills of the employees ensure smooth interaction. “Teamwork only works well if each person's skills are valued. To do this, dealing with one another must be characterized by respect and tolerance. The manager has a central role to play: these values must be exemplified and all team members treated equally, even if this is more difficult for deliberate reminders than for enthusiastic doers. The team needs both skills, ”says Dohmen.
A good player is not necessarily a successful coach
Successful players are characterized by a secure feeling for the ball, lightning-fast assessment of situations and opportunities as well as team spirit. But not every player can convey this often intuitive knowledge as a trainer or formulate criticism in such a way that it stimulates improvement. "It is similar with successful specialists: They are brilliant in their special discipline, but they often lack the appropriate soft skills to lead a team. Only when managers and employees trust each other and tasks and powers have been clearly agreed in the team, do they enjoy challenges and work together in top form, ”says Dohmen.
