Energy efficiency and climate protection: Hotels and hostels still have some catching up to do
Berlin, November 8, 2018 - Investing in overnight stays is worthwhile in energy efficiency and sustainability: You save costs and CO2, increase the property value and can use your climate-friendly commitment to communicate with guests and employees. The German Energy Agency (Dena) draws this conclusion in the "Insight Hotel Real Estate" analysis, which evaluates the experience gained from the "Check-in Energy Efficiency" pilot project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics. In it, Dena supported 30 hotels and hostels with the energy-efficient renovation.

At the same time, it has been shown that many companies do not tackle climate protection in their day-to-day business at all or only inadequately. In the private hotel industry, in particular, there is often a lack of time and personnel. Energy advice specifically geared towards the overnight accommodation industry is therefore an important key to greater sustainability in hotels.
"In the hotel industry, we see examples of success and the need for more support in equal measure. New solutions and a more intensive dialogue between politics and industry are required to initiate more dynamism in energy efficiency and climate protection - for example, through support packages especially for hotels and hostels" , says dena managing director Andreas Kuhlmann.

Further improve the quality of energy advice, new incentives for funding
Energy consulting lays the foundation for all efficiency decisions. In the pilot project, the quality and scope of the energetic advice varied greatly: They ranged from vague estimates to a comprehensive renovation schedule.
For this reason, Dena recommends strengthening and making industry-specific know-how among energy consultants visible - for example by offering more training opportunities, identifying key sectors in the energy efficiency expert list for federal funding programs and supporting regional or national expert networks. Hoteliers also need their own networks to strengthen the exchange of experience on energy efficiency.
It is also desirable to work more closely with banks to develop energy concepts including costs and a financing plan. This increases the chance that hotel operators will actually implement the modernization. Furthermore, it makes sense to create new incentives for a holistic analysis of the real estate, which takes into account both the building envelope and the system technology - for example, through a bonus in the promotion.

Instrument renovation schedule also for non-residential buildings
Many overnight establishments are starting to renovate in stages. Based on the experience from the residential building sector, a reliable standard can be established by developing an individual renovation roadmap for non-residential buildings. The instrument presents the individual steps of an energetic renovation clearly and easily understandable for potential building owners. Portfolio solutions are available for youth hostels - all hostels belonging to the respective regional association are considered at the same time.
Model project "Check-in energy efficiency": Between 2015 and the end of 2018, Dena accompanied 30 hotels, hostels and the efficiency experts involved in the renovation, network exchange, communication with guests and employees and hotel-specific public relations. Most project participants were able to optimize their operations through energy advice, energy efficiency, renewable energies and monitoring.
