Applicants want to pick up speed - The latest applicant study among professional starters shows that candidates want a significantly accelerated application process, especially on their smartphones
Cologne, June 14, 2018 -
Three quarters of the current career starters in Germany expect that a mobile application via smartphone will soon become standard in Germany. This is a result of the current applicant survey carried out by the HR tech specialist Talents Connect together with the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences. According to this, 43 percent of the job starters surveyed are certain that the mobile process will be established within the next two years. 13 percent even think that mobile application is already established today. That fits: 78 percent would even apply more if the mobile process were the rule. Employers who enable the mobile process are perceived as modern, fast and intelligent.

With the desire for more mobility in the application process, there is also the attraction on the candidate side of investing less time in the future in the creation of cover letters, CVs, etc. Because 61 percent of the survey participants would like to reduce this, more than a third would prefer to cut it in half.
"From the perspective of many applicants starting their professional lives, the conventional application process as we currently know it is obviously no longer up to date. They expect it to be adapted in the future to their dynamic media usage behavior and how they deal with time. In times when If a candidate occupies a prominent position in many professional fields, employers are well advised to meet this requirement profile ", said Prof. Christoph Beck from the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences.
Processing time decreases rapidly after the first evaluation
Most professional starters (40 percent) currently invest between one and two hours per application in preparing their documents. More than a quarter (27 percent) even take three to four hours to do this. However, this time-consuming processing span is significantly reduced when the first application is written. Almost every second applicant (48 percent) then saves half the time that he has invested in the first application.
"This result shows that applicants from the second application onwards tend to send a lot of content from the first application to the employers to whom they subsequently apply. Of course, this ultimately makes them interchangeable. This trend is also evident on the employer side, for example in job advertisements recognizable where phrases and indifferent statements dominate. This means that we are dealing here with a process in which two parties want to come together and only disclose interchangeable content. This cannot work in the long run, "says Lars Wolfram, COO and one of the founders of Talents Connect from Cologne.
More transparency and more acceleration are required
The career starters combine the desire for a standardized mobile application process with clear arguments. For example, 69 percent of them want to be able to search for a job and then apply regardless of location. Also interesting: More than three quarters (78 percent) want to "track" their application - so they want to know which process step it is in, how long it takes to make a decision or who has already viewed it. Overall, applicants want faster response times anyway. For example, 40 percent expect confirmation of receipt on the first day after the application. 61 percent would like to be invited to an interview after 10 days at the latest, and 71 percent believe that the employment contract should be ready for signature after four weeks.
About the study: For the applicant survey, Talents Connect and the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences (Chair of Human Resources) surveyed 455 young professionals about their attitude regarding the application process. The survey took place online and was carried out in February and March 2018.
